Why did we have to enter the ‘tWHYlight Zone’?

I knew it was out there. I knew it was coming. But I was still unprepared.

The tWHYlight Zone is the toddler phase dreaded by all parents—the phase that tests your patience, your intelligence and your creativity. Then one day, when you least expect it, it begins. At first you think your little one’s curiosity is fascinating. Then you realize that they really don’t care about the answer, they just can’t seem to stop asking the question ‘why’, and with the same lack of self-control you can’t seem to stop answering the incessant whys. How many answers can you come up with before you lose it? Try it. Even the most patient parent will crumble under the pressure. You will lose it or shut it down. You will never satisfy your little one’s neverending stream of questioning whys. And yet, you will try!

Me: It’s time for bed.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because it’s dark out.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because it’s 7pm.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because that’s your bedtime.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because you’re tired and need to sleep.
Meebs: Why?
Me: So you can grow big and strong.
Meebs: Why?
Me: So you can do all the big girl things you want to do.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because that’s the point of life.
Meebs: Why?
Me: I don’t know why.
Meebs: Why?
Me: Because I f@*king said so, that’s why!” [OMG I sound like my mother!!!]
Meebs: Why?
Me: [sigh] I’m done…
Meebs: Why?

The only consolation is that we are not alone. As parents we all enter the tWHYlight Zone at some point in our child’s development. Try to see the humour and take comfort in knowing that it is just a phase. Check out this stand-up routine on why the “why” zone is so hard on parents. Click here.
