The old saying, “if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” is a philosophical riddle that evokes questions about observation and the perception of reality. It probes the metaphysical concept of whether or not something can exist if it’s not being perceived. So, by the same application, if a baby takes her first steps and no one is around to see it, did she really take her first steps?

Meebs has been cruising around the house for months, but over the last 4 weeks she’s become much bolder and is testing her balance without hanging onto sturdy objects .Every now and then she takes a half baby step and then carefully lowers herself into a squat. I don’t think these instances classify as first steps. Then, at daycare on Tuesday (July 26), she was dancing to the music as she always does, one hand firmly planted against the wall and the other hand swinging and jiving. Our caregiver looked down for a moment to help another child and when she looked up Meebs was standing in the middle of the room, still dancing. Then she lowered herself to the floor and continued rocking to the rhythm. She’s a super baby, but I don’t think she has super powers, so it’s unlikely she flew. And, she didn’t have time to crawl. So, she must have walked. But does it count if no one saw it?

I’m going to say no, because it breaks my heart that I may have missed this mega milestone. I have a feeling that one of these days she’s going to sprint across the living room, catching us all off guard. I just hope she does it on a weekend when daddy and I can witness this enormous baby step.
